About The Craft: Originally Blue Pottery came in India during the medieval times via Persia. Blue Pottery of Jaipur and it’s surrounding villages is unique in primarily being a ceramic body made of quartz, unlike other Potteries, which are made of clay. It?s exclusivity lies in the hand painted motifs that reflect on it?s Persian origin and the amalgamation of the original designs with the local ethnic flavour. The composition is well suited to the hot and dry climate of the region. This unique ceramic composition has several advantages, such as the possibility of joining dried pieces, single firing for baking and glazing unlike the double firing required in Clay Pottery, with minimal post-firing shrinkage.
About The Artisan: Ramnarayan has been credited with reviving the glory and popularity of blue pottery which at some point was nearly extinct and dying. In his endeavour to revive this lost craft Ramnarayan and his brother Lalaram Prajapat built a team by uplifting economically weak fellow craftsmen and helped them learn and earn through making blue pottery. Ramnarayan experiments and dedication to the craft added vibrance and variety. He used waste marble dust powder and transformed them into glowing blue colored pots, created enchanting beads, door knobs, candle stands, lanterns, coasters, perfume bottles, and other innovative and useful items. Further, his experiments made pots more colorful by adding colours other than blue, to the palette.
