Description

About the Craft : Bandhani, or tie & dye, is not merely a technique or textile, but a strong symbol of cultural identity of the people of Rajasthan, especially its women. The gift of a chunari marked the auspicious times in a woman?s life- betrothal, marriage, the birth of a child and different types of tie-dyed fabrics were worn to mark the seasons and festivals of the year. Tie & Dye is a technique of dyeing fabric with a combination of resist methods, wherein the designs obtained are unique and often irreplicable. Shibori or Clamp Shibori is one form of tie-dye that originated in the 8th century in Japan and Indonesia. The process of Shibori includes giving the fabric many folds and clamping it with patterned wooden blocks before dyeing. The wooden block resists the dye in its place, giving it structured, yet raw finish. The final outcome is the perfect summer outfit with its breezy appeal.
About the Artisan: DISHA is a registered Voluntary Organization working for the upliftment and advancement of the women living under the shadow of ignorance and suffering from social prejudices in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. Started with the objectives of making women aware of their legal rights and financially independent through their bandhani (tie & dye) skills, Disha came into existence in 2009. The organization is presently working with 315 women and is expected to grow by another 350 in the coming years.
