About the Artisan:: Pittaramulu, a national awardee carpet weaver from Telangana has been making exquisite kalamkari dhurries since the past 40 years. A master craftsperson started with only 1 loom now has around 10. A laborious craft, it can take upto a month to make one large sized carpets. Made with natural colors on cotton, cotton-wool blend, jute blend they will last a lifetime.
About the Craft: Kalamkari is a traditional hand-block printing technique practised in the Machhilipatnam cluster of Andhra Pradesh. The theme of the prints and patterns is largely mythological, and bright colours like red, blue, green, and yellow are used. The art, traditionally, represents the depictions from Ramayana and Mahabharata done on wall hangings. Today, new product range like sarees, dupattas and bedcovers with contemporary motifs are being introduced.
