Description
About the Artisan: Subir Bishwas is a master of the traditional craft of jamdani weaving from Shantipur in West Bengal, India. Subir’s passion for weaving was ignited by his father, who imparted the knowledge and techniques of this art form to him. However, Subir’s desire to perfect his craft led him to enrol in a handloom school in 2017, where he gained a deeper understanding of the design process. Today, Subir is not only a skilled artisan himself, but he also empowers and supports over 80 weavers, predominantly women. Together, they create a stunning range of jamdani silk, cotton, and linen sarees, stoles, dupatta, and yardages, each piece a testament to the timeless beauty of this traditional craft.
About the Craft: In West Bengal, woven fabrics are famous for their very fine count, soft texture and intricate jacquard or Jamdani patterns. Jamdani is a fine fabric crafted by the supplementary weft technique of weaving. The Jamdani motifs were traditionally inspired by nature and the characteristic feature of this craft was that motifs were always translated into geometric outlines or shapes.
