About the Craft: Gond paintings are folk and tribal art form practiced by the Gondare tribe. They are the largest Adivasi Community in India who are predominantly from Madhya Pradesh but can also be found in pockets of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh, and Odisha. Paintings are a reflection of human connection with his natural surroundings and very often are narratives from ancient legends, folklores, fantasies, and aspirations. The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture, based on a strong element of story-telling. According to the Gond belief system, all things are inhabited by a spirit and, consequently, are sacred.
About The Artisan: Sharvan Paraste is 29 years old from Dinduri District, Madhya Pradesh. After working four to five years under master painters, he developed his skills in Gond painting. Later he started painting himself and ventured as an independent artist along with his brother and friend.
