About the Craft :: Conjured by the creative sensibilities of the artisans, Dhokra displays an artistic intriguing wirework finish that exhibit striking harmony, beauty and utility value. Dhokra metal casting of Orissa is a typical tribal art form, practiced by tribal families. Associated with nine different communities of the State, it reflects different ethnic identities, heritage, design and motifs. Dhokra is an artistic blend of the creative imagination of the artisan and the ingenuity of the indigenous metal casting technique. The object is cast in metal (alloys of Nickel, Brass and Zinc), using what is known as the lost- wax technique. The artifacts are ritual objects and their themes are mostly animals, jewellery, and icons of gods and goddesses.
These artifacts are universally admired and collected as household decorative objects for their ethnic beauty and artistic ingenuity. Contemporary artisans of this craft also make other utility items like jewellery, door knob, door handle, ash-tray, butter box, pen holder, candle and incense stick stand, photo frame, tissue box.
