About the Artisan: Anwesha Tribal Arts & Crafts is a non-governmental Handicrafts development organisation established in 1990. It was founded as an association of trained social workers and focused initially on the promotion of social work practice in Orissa. It works with a special concentration in tribal sub-plan areas and the KBK district, to retain and develop the rich cultural heritage of tribal arts through community empowerment and developing sustainable income sources.
About the Craft : Dhokra means casting of bell metal through a lost wax process. During the process, the vacuum created between the core and the clay layer is filled with molten metal, which is then allowed to cool down and solidify after it vaporizes. The outer clay mould is cracked open, revealing the beauty of the final sculpture. Dhokra is an alloy of nickel, brass and zinc. When these three are mixed in the appropriate proportion it gives an antique look.
