Description
About the Craft : Block-printing is one of the old crafts and is thought ancient textile art in existence. Five thousand years ago, craftsmen carved intricate patterns into teakwood blocks, these would then be soaked in olive oil for ten days, dried in the sun, and then pressed onto vibrant, dyed cloth in complex designs. Today the same processes are being executed by craftspeople with these inherited hand skills.
About the Artisan: Kamal Handprint is a family-run block printing business for over 40 years. It is currently run by Naveen Chipa, who is 3rd generation block printer. ‘Kamal’ in Hindi means lotus flower. The company name is an ode to floral prints used in block printing. They currently support over 16 members, where 8 are men who are involved in hand block printing and 8 women, who do quilting and stitching.
Naveen tells us that he always uses authentic hand-block print, and provides the best quality and pricing to sustain the craft.
