About the Artisan :Started in 2015 with just a small group, Savina Hastakala has evolved to become a community of 500 women artisans from Barmer, Rajasthan. As they have found expertise in embroideries, they learnt to produce various different bed covers, cushion covers, table runners, wall hangings and more items.
About the Craft : Applique is the process of sewing smaller pieces of fabric onto a larger background fabric. It is an ancient technique of creating beautiful and decorative items with different pieces of cloth. Nomadic people of the desert have long pieced together their tents and even decorated them with elaborate applique. It is generally practised by women for dowry to make decorative bags, pillows and sitting mats. This serves both economic and decorative purposes.
