Description
About the Craft : In West Bengal, woven fabrics are famous for their very fine count, soft texture and intricate jacquard or Jamdani patterns. Jamdani is a fine fabric crafted by the supplementary weft technique of weaving. The Jamdani motifs were traditionally inspired by nature and the characteristic feature of this craft was that motifs were always translated into geometric outlines or shapes.
About the Artisan: Many skilled weavers from Dhaka relocated to Fulia, a town in the Nadia region of West Bengal, during the 1971 Bagaladesh riots. These skilled weavers quickly resumed their ancestral craft. To assist the community with marketing, Rajendra Basak founded Nutan Fulia Tantubay Samabay Samity Pvt Ltd in 1976 with the six weavers. Over 650 weavers are connected to the group today. Ramen Basak explains how this society adopts trends and teams up with various designers to develop new designs and product categories. Here, Jamdani and jacquard fabrics made of cotton, silk, linen, and organza are fashioned into saris, stoles, dupattas, and yardage.
