About the Craft:: Bijnor district is one of the most important centers of woodcarving in the country. The tradition of woodcarving in this district can be traced back to the Mughal era. The craftspeople here specialise in carving wooden combs, toys, bangles, jewellery, key chains, trinket boxes, walking sticks and furniture. The most common types of wood used are sheesham, mango and babool.
About the Artist::Born in 1963, Asharam worked in the fields with his father as a child and later took to woodcraft to earn an additional income. This side activity turned into a passion for young asharam resulting in a serious engagement with the craft. Practicing the craft for nearly 30 years, Asharam has mastered the technique of jali work, carving and inlay in wood among other skills.
